GURGAON: Gau rakshaks in Gurgaon are applying for arms licenses citing threats from armed cow smugglers.
They say when they try to stop cow smugglers at night, they are attacked with arms. The vigilantes claim that they have been fired upon many times.
The head of the Haryana Gau Rakshak group, Dharmendra Yadav, said that cow smugglers work in groups of at least 10 and all of them are usually armed. He said he has been a victim of their attacks thrice and had earlier sought police protection.

A cow vigilante, Vikrant Yadav, was murdered in August 2013 allegedly by cow smugglers. Following his death, angry villagers had jammed railway tracks and burned vehicles in protest.
In more recent incidents, some cow vigilantes were shot at in the Sohna and Pataudi areas.
But the cow vigilante group also admit that certain miscreants are bringing a bad name to the entire community and agreed with Narendra Modi's remarks, who had said that 70-80 per cent of 'gau rakshaks' hide their nefarious activities in the garb of cow protection.
Reports have also surfaced of cow vigilantes in Gurgaon allegedly targeting migrants and meat sellers over suspicions beef usage.
Gurgaon Police Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar has said that no person can be granted an arms license on the pretext of protecting themselves from cow smugglers.
He said that a person applying for an arms license is inquired to determine whether he or she will be able to prevent the misuse of the arm, besides other factors.
Mr Yadav had applied for the license around a year ago, but is to receive it. He has also written to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for help.
